Injectable Weight Loss Management

Guidance on Prescribing Weight Loss Medications in Wales

There has been a growing demand across the UK for injectable weight loss treatments, such as Mounjaro.

The Welsh Government has issued updated guidance outlining who can prescribe these medications and under what conditions. According to this guidance, injectable weight loss medications can only be prescribed by specialist weight management services. As a result, GPs are not permitted to prescribe these treatments.

Please note: if you are receiving weight loss medications through a private provider, we are not able to take over prescribing. It is the private provider's responsibility to assess whether the medication is appropriate for you and to arrange any necessary monitoring and follow-up, as this will not be managed in primary care.
